CALL TO ORDER, President Nick Hoffman, 7:15 pm II. WELCOME Welcome to everyone, especially guests Ashley Bucko from the Peace Neighborhood Center and Don Kossick from Downtown Ann Arbor Kiwanis. Bill Tasch from Downtown Ann Arbor Kiwanis was not able to attend tonight because he is in New Orleans helping with relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina. III. HAPPY CENTS Phillip LaRue introduced the club to Happy Cents, a segment of the meeting when anyone can deposit change into a special jar and have the opportunity to share something that makes them happy. All of the money from the jar will go toward supporting Jaria, our PROVIDES child. This week we heard that Phillip was happy to be done with classes for the week, Kelly Cobb had written four legal cases in under three hours, and it made Don happy to see so many smiling faces at the meeting. IV. PROJECTS IN REVIEW Stefanie Theis talked about the creative ways she came up with to get rid of as many newspapers as possible and earn back her Circle K dues at the Michigan Daily distribution. Amy Mangieri recounted eating cookies and visiting with residents at Riverview Nursing Home. Caroline Froning told us about Washtenaw Literacy, where she helped people from various cultural backgrounds practice their English skills using comic strips. V. PEACE NEIGHBORHOOD SPEAKER Ashley Bucko spoke to the club about Peace Neighborhood Center, which provides programs for children, families, and individuals who are impacted by social and economic problems. The center's new after-school tutoring program pairs children attending Ann Arbor Public Schools in grades K-8 with volunteers who are asked to be able to make a weekly commitment. VI. COMMITTEE SYSTEM OVERVIEW Phillip explained the structure of Circle K's committee system, the role of each committee, the application and interview process, and the benefits of taking on a leadership position within Circle K. Each committee chair then described the upcoming undertakings of their committee. VII. MEET THE COMMITTEES Based on the brief descriptions given by each committee chair, people were asked to choose the three committees that interested them most and rotate between the corresponding committee stations to get more information, ask questions, and ultimately decide which committee they might apply for. VIII. UPCOMING PROJECTS Kelly talked about 24 Hours of Service, which will take place from November 5th-6th. If you are interested in helping out with the planning of this large-scale event, send an e-mail to kwcobb@umich.edu. OTHER PROJECTS: Ann Arbor Kiwanis Rummage Sale~~~~~Sat. However, "Suruchi" has also been mistaken for "Panchero's", the name of a Mexican fast-food joint on S. University. (Maybe it's just me, but I find it hard to see the similarities between "Suruchi" and "Panchero".) In order to cope with the Stucchi-Suruchi-Panchero confusion, it has been suggested that I open up a one-stop restaurant serving burritos and ice-cream and call it "Pancherucchi's". Would YOU enjoy such a dining experience?
