CALL TO ORDER, Vice President Phillip LaRue, 7:10pm II. WELCOME to everyone, especially guest Don Kossick of the Ann Arbor Downtown Kiwanis. III. MEMBERS OF THE MONTH The Members of the Month for September are: <> Caroline Froning <> Grace Milanowski Congratulations! IV. HAPPY CENTS Happy Cents is a segment of the meeting when anyone can deposit change into our special "Jaria Jar" and have the opportunity to share something that makes them happy. This week, we heard that Phillip appreciates the hard-working Leadership Team for working so hard in September, Mary got 100% on her Calculus quiz, Whitney had an amazing time visiting Karuna in D.C., Natalia is excited for Grey's Anatomy tonight, Amy just bought her ticket for the Penn State game, and Charlotte has a great GSI for Psych 111. V. PROJECTS IN REVIEW Amy Shatten talked about the Flora and Fauna Art Show last weekend at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, where she helped collect donations and guard the donations box. She got to look around at the art and meet a lot of great people. VI. SOCIAL ISSUE OF THE MONTH: HUNGER Chris Corteg presented this month's SIM, hunger, which he defined as a severe lack of food. We learned that one in ten households experiences hunger in the United States alone, and over 5,000 people in Washtenaw county receive weekly assistance. Some causes are poverty, famine, and poor health. Anyone can fall victim to hunger if, for example, they lose their job or experience a decline in health and are unable to function on their own. There is a project coming up to collect canned goods door-to-door which will be distributed to local food pantries. VII. BIRTHDAY COMPETITION Every month we have a friendly competition to recognize birthdays, and this competition celebrated September and October birthdays. Contestants were given a small pumpkin and instructed to draw on it any member of the Executive Board as well as they could. The winner will go on to compete in the final competition at the end of the year. VIII. UPCOMING PROJECTS Whitney McEachran talked about a new fundraiser that will continue throughout the year with the Eco-Phones organization. There will be a box designated for old cell phones and ink cartridges in the office and at every Thursday meeting. For each item deposited, Eco-Phones will donate money to Scholarship America, which helps students with college tuition. Eco-Phones will then either recycle or refurbish the otherwise toxic phones and ink cartidges. Lindsay Nelson talked about WACC (Washtenaw Area Council for Children) fundraisers coming up. On September 14th, there is a Chocolate and Wine Tasting Benefit, and on November 6th there is a Signature Chefs Benefit. The deadline to sign up for Signature Chefs is October 13th. Zeil Shah reminded us that the first round of Michigan Dailys is this Saturday, and that membership dues are due next Thursday by the meeting. <> Sequoia Place w/ Food Gatherers...Sat. In one of my favorite episodes, "Conflict Resolution," Michael (the boss) decides to read out loud the complaints the employees had filed against each other. In the following scene, Michael reads complaints made by one employee, Dwight, against co-worker Jim. In between complaints, they cut to an interview with Jim for his reactions. ------- MICHAEL [Reading Dwight's complaints]: "Someone replaced all my pens and pencils with crayons. I suspect Jim Halpert. Everyone has called me Dwayne all day. I think Jim Halpert paid them to." [Cut to interview] JIM [Laughs]: Yes, five bucks each, and it was totally worth it. MICHAEL [Reading Dwight's complaints]: "This morning, I knocked myself in the head with the phone." [Cut to interview] JIM: That actually took a while. I had to put more and more nickels into his handset til he got used to the weight, and then I just... took 'em all out. MICHAEL [Reading Dwight's complaints]: "Every time I typed my name it said 'Diapers.'" [Cut to interview] JIM: Just a simple macro. You know, these actually don't sound that funny one after another. But he does deserve it, though. ------- You have to actually see the episode for the full effect, so, check it out. It's brilliant.
