CALL TO ORDER, President Stefanie Theis, 7:10 pm II. WELCOME Welcome to everyone, especially our guests Don Kossick and Bill Tasch from Ann Arbor Downtown Kiwanis. III. HAPPY CENTS Happy Cents is a segment of the meeting when anyone can deposit change into our special "Jaria Jar" and have the opportunity to share something that makes them happy. This week, we found that: <> Stefanie Theis is happy for UM Circle K alum, Megan Foley, because she just got a job! <> Ellen Creal will be visiting friends in D.C. this weekend. <> Lindsay Grude loves the recent Fall weather. IV. PROJECTS IN REVIEW -> Kiwanis Rummage Sale: Alisha Opperman and Caroline Froning attended the Ann Arbor Downtown Kiwanis Rummage Sale, a weekly event on Saturday mornings. They met some very interesting people, and Caroline bought a South Park Kenny doll. -> Riverview Nursing Home: Amy Mangieri, our past Elderly Service Chair, talked about the social event at Riverview last week. One resident always remembers volunteers' names, and is thrilled to see them every week. V. MEET THE COMMITTEES Circle K has an extensive committee system that is organized into three clusters: Service, Internal, and External. The Service cluster includes the Children's Service, Health and Elderly Service, and Hunger/Housing/Nature Service committees. The Internal cluster includes the Historian, Membership Development, and Technology committees. The External cluster includes the Fundraising, Public Relations, and Kiwanis Family committees. We played a game similar to Taboo to get attendees excited to learn about the committees. Each of the committee chairs was to describe their committee until the audience guessed which one it was, but with a twist: They were given a list of words they could not use while describing their committee. Everyone was then given a chance to walk around tables that had been set up for each committee and talk to committee chairs. There was also information available for three other leadership opportunities: Circle K Service Day, Africa service trip, and the District Convention subcommittee. <> CHILDREN'S SERVICE: Works with Children in both an academic and social environments. <> HEALTH AND ELDERLY SERVICE: Works to improve the health and well-being of others as well as elderly in both independent and dependent living environments. <> HUNGER/HOUSING/NATURE SERVICE: Helps alleviate hunger and housing disadvantages, and works with environmental conservancies and animals. <> HISTORIAN: Creates the club scrapbook by taking pictures and collecting mementos, puts slideshows together, and makes videos for formal ceremonies. This committee also maintains the club's history by organizing records and collecting alumni contact information. <> MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: Plans programs and events to develop members' leadership skills, educates members about the club and its services, and promotes the social aspect of the club. <> TECHNOLOGY: Designs, develops new programs for, and maintains the website. This committee also maintains the office computers and sets up the projector before meetings. You do not need to be experienced in computer science to apply. <> FUNDRAISING: Develops and carries out fundraisers to help make significant donations to local charities. <> PUBLIC RELATIONS: Develops and carries out all activities to recruit new members and raise awareness about Circle K on campus and in the community. They design posters, banners, and diag boards, and inform newspapers, radio, and television stations of Circle K events. <> KIWANIS FAMILY RELATIONS: Works with all levels of the Kiwanis Family to develop stronger relationships between them. <> CIRCLE K SERVICE DAY: Contact Zeil (zeilshah@umich.edu) if you're interested in helping plan projects and figure out the details of this event, which lasts an entire 24 hours. <> AFRICA SERVICE PROJECT: Contact Stefanie (stheis@umich.edu) for more information about helping plan the project and/or going to Africa this summer. <> DISTRICT CONVENTION (DCON) SUBCOMMITTEE: Contact Natalia (nmaska@umich.edu) if you're interested in helping plan DCON this year. VI. JOINING A COMMITTEE If you want to join a committee, first read the requirements and then complete the application in its entirety and turn it in by September 28th. Before I'd even realized what was going on, I was playing the game, and playing and playing. At some point Whitney joined in, and suddenly, forty-five minutes had gone by! I learned some pretty interesting things about my friends... For example, Lindsay Nelson loves to key trees, and one of Chris Corteg's favorite movies is "The Notebook". You should check it out, but not if you have work to do.
