HAPPY CENTS Happy Cents is a segment of the meeting when anyone can deposit change into our special "Jaria Jar" and have the opportunity to share something that makes them happy. PROJECTS IN REVIEW >> Neutral Zone Dinner: Kelly told us about making sandwiches for dinner with the kids from Neutral Zone whose parents cannot pick them up until later in the evening. >> Builders' Club: Alisha talked about the last Builders' Club meeting, at which the kids planned a Spring Cleanup for their school. VI. BIRTHDAY COMPETITION Every month we have a friendly competition to recognize birthdays, and this competition celebrated March and April birthdays. Contestants were given uniquely-shaped shamrocks that each matched one of the shamrocks held by audience members. The first person to find their match in the crowd was the winner. Congratulations to Zeil Shah for winning this one! VII. SIM: LITERACY The focus of this month's social issue is literacy, a widespread problem that often goes unnoticed. We talked about the usual things we read a on daily basis, like road signs, menus, and bills, and how difficult and stressful life would be if we weren't able to read them. VIII. QUESTION 1: True or False: You only go on the annual ski trip because of the outlet mall at exit 212. Nick: True - Ralph Lauren has hats for $13.99 Stefanie: False, there is no stopping on road trips. Whitney: I thought that was why everyone went... Kelly: *Silence - Pretending I didn't hear the question* QUESTION 2: Boyne Mountain: ACTUALLY a mountain, or a well-disguised conspiracy? Nick: I think Paul Bunyan is buried under the "mountain." They were going to name the mountain `Bunyan Mountain, but they thought that was too obvious. Stefanie: Every time someone says Boyne Mountain isn't a real mountain, it dies a little, just like fairies. Kelly: A very well disguised conspiracy. Its actually concave, and skiing downhill is just an optical illusion. Megan: Regarding mountains, the only well-disguised conspiracy in Michigan is Mount Brighton. But let's be honest, calling it "Mount" Brighton doesn't fool anyone- we all know it's just a snow-covered landfill. I guess that conspiracy is not so well disguised after all. QUESTION 3: Why do you think it is that some people buy a lift ticket just to ride it up and down all day? Kelly: There is a great thrill getting on a lift that is covered in ice because they don't wipe them down after midnight snowstorms. I love clinging to the side of the chair to ensure staying alive. Megan: Obviously because it's fun to watch people fall and/or trip over each other when they try to get off at the top. Nick: I only did it once and it was only because I was really lonely. The lift attendants didn't seem to mind, but it was tricky when I came down the mountain and people tried to get onto the lift that I as already sitting on. After I pushed three or four people off, they said I couldn't ride anymore. So, I stuck my tongue to the metal frame and they couldn't get me off without my tongue ripping, and then they'd have a lawsuit. I like chairlifts. And kittens. QUESTION 4: Skiers vs. Snowboarders: Which are better and why? Whitney: 2 (skis) > 1 (snowboard) and that's all I have/need to say. Stefanie: Snowboarding...try watching a fallen skier get up, they look like complete idiots! Megan: I am a skier. I am better than everyone. Everyone includes snowboarders. Therefore, skiers are better than snowboarders. Kelly: SKIERS. Snowboarders are little hooligans who constantly move right in front of you only to fall over because they can't move their feet properly. They are also awkward to ride the lift with. Their list of faults is endless and thats not just my opinion. I read it in a book of undeniable facts once, too. Karuna: Lodgers. Because we entered and left the resort in the same condition.
