CALL TO ORDER, President Nick Hoffman, 7:10 pm II. WELCOME Welcome to everyone, especially our guests Don Kossick and Bill Tasch from Ann Arbor Downtown Kiwanis and Bill Feiser from the National Alliance on Mental Illness. III. HAPPY CENTS Happy Cents is a segment of the meeting when anyone can deposit change into our special "Jaria Jar" and have the opportunity to share something that makes them happy. This week we heard that Phillip LaRue got to have lunch at Earthen Jar today and tomorrow he will eat at No Thai!; Kristin Doyle was excited to have received an e-mail about flying out to Connecticut next week for a job interview; Karuna Seshasai enjoyed a meal of Indian food this afternoon with Whitney McEachran, Lindsay Nelson, and Amy Shatten; and Megan Foley is looking forward to receiving sign-ups on the interest sheet for the Tigers game social on April 14th or 15th (e-mail megfoley@umich.edu if you are interested)! IV. PROJECTS IN REVIEW Laura Grai talked about the gift bags we made for the Alumni Association to give to the Children of Uganda, a group of children who have lost their parents to AIDS or civil war and now travel as a group and perform together. The gifts included pillow cases hand-embroidered with the children's names, snacks, and personalized greeting cards congratulating them on their performance at the Power Center. In return for doing the project, the Alumni Association gave us a pizza dinner and USB keys! Ellen Creal, Manna Hara, and Ashley Rowe recounted their experience at District Convention (DCON), where 18 members of our clubs spent last weekend doing service projects, attending workshops, and meeting people from other Circle K clubs in the Michigan District. Some of their other favorite activities included solving a murder mystery, dancing, and playing Catch Phrase! Our club also won a few awards at DCON, including the Outstanding Officer Awards for the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Editor; Outstanding Club Achievement Award; First Place Scrapbook; the Single Service Award for the Holmes Elementary Mentorship Program; and the Kiwanis Family Relations Award! V. SOCIAL ISSUE OF THE MONTH As a continuation of our Social Issue of the Month programming for March, Bill Feiser talked to us about depression. He told us that this disorder of the brain is caused by both a genetic predisposition as well as stress and other environmental factors, and the consequences can include a depressed immune system, losing time at work, and suicide. Though the illness is quite treatable, there is no cure for severe or long-term depression. For more information on depression and the National Alliance on Mental Illness, visit http://www.nami.org. VI. SENIORS' PRESENTATION This evening, the seniors did a presentation recounting some of their favorite memories from their past few years in Circle K. These include: - Matthew Thomas' obsession with hunting. - The otter. - Kelly Cobb's fondness of black cashmere sweaters. - Kristin Childress' chronic state of sleep deprivation due to early morning PR-ing sessions. - Kelly's infamous demonstration of slalom skiing and various other "dance" moves made popular by the seniors. - Matthew thinking "mulch" spelled backwards has the letter "n" in it during an intense game of Cranium. - Megan Foley and Dana Simons meeting each other at the committee retreat sophomore year and forming a lasting friendship in spite of their drastically different feelings toward an accounting exam. The seniors would like to thank everyone in Circle K who has made their college experience so memorable! VII. UPCOMING PROJECTS Stefanie Theis talked about Washtenaw Literacy, a project we go to twice a week where we help people who are learning english as a second language get ready for their citizenship and licensing tests and pick up some useful slang terms through conversation, reading exercises, and games. Nick Hoffman told us about Dance Marathon, where dancers (including 8 members of Circle K will be staying on their feet for thirty hours to raise funds and awareness for children in need of rehabilitation at Mott Hospital in Ann Arbor and Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. In order to make sure that the dancers stay happy and motivated during the marathon, we need people to help run our activity for the Smorgasbord and sign up to be moralers at www.umdm.org. Megan Foley reported that this year's Circle K intramural broomball team is the first in recent history to ever score a point, thanks to the phenomenal offensive skills of Chris Irvine. The unexpected goal led to a tied game! The final regular season game of this season will take place this Sunday night at 12:40am at Yost Ice Arena. If you have never played broomball before, you will not want to miss this opportunity! OTHER PROJECTS: Wild Swan Theater~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Sat.
