CALL TO ORDER, President Nick Hoffman, 7:10 pm II. WELCOME Welcome to everyone, especially our guest Bill Tasch from Ann Arbor Downtown Kiwanis. III. HAPPY CENTS Happy Cents is a segment of the meeting when anyone can deposit change into our special "Jaria Jar" and have the opportunity to share something that makes them happy. This week we heard that Phillip LaRue enjoyed his stay in New York City where he slept-in every day of break; Nick Hoffman had fun visiting his sister in Charlotte, NC, where he saw the Dead Sea Scrolls and a rat basketball game; Zeal Shah is happy to lend out her DVD of "Invisible Children" and to be celebrating Anna Milanowski's birthday; Whitney McEachran had a fabulous time in Disneyland last week; Katie Proos spent her spring break in Mississippi helping with Hurricane Katrina relief; Ben Wachtel is excited that it is the best month of the year because of basketball; and Manna Hara spent her break doing dry wall in Mississippi, which made her happy because she loves manual labor! IV. PROJECTS IN REVIEW Nick Hoffman recounted his experience at Outdoorama, where he helped staff a booth for the World Wildlife Federation. He had a good time sampling the venison, beef, and moose jerky and looking at the owls and eagles that were on display. Kelly Cobb told us about the Washtenaw Literacy games project, where he played Taboo with people for whom English is not a first language. Washtenaw Literacy is a very popular project, so now you have the option of going twice per week! Zeil Shah talked about the Dexter Kiwanis Meeting. Dexter Kiwanis is one of our sponsoring clubs, and they provided Zeal with the chance to listen to a speaker from the Boy Scouts of America and to taste her first Irish meal. V. MEMBERS OF THE MONTH Every month Circle K honors 1-2 members who go above and beyond in some way to make a difference in the club and in the community. Congratulations to this month's Members of the Month, Lindsay Nelson and Whitney McEachran, for their contributions to their respective committees and for their willingness to take on extra responsibilities within the club. To nominate someone for Member of the Month, fill out the online form under the "Member Resources" section of the website (http://umcirclek.org). VI. BIRTHDAY COMPETITION This evening, members with birthdays in March and April participated in the Membership Development Committee's birthday competition. Their task was to eat five saltine crackers as quickly as possible. Rich Torres was the first to finish all of his crackers (he did it in under 1 minute!) and he will go on to compete in the final competition next month. VII. SOCIAL ISSUE OF THE MONTH: DEPRESSION The Social Issue of the Month program serves to educate members about various social issues in our community. This week, the Elderly Service Committee introduced this month's issue, depression. We learned about the rates of depression in the United States, as well as some of the causes and treatments. We also found out that depression is not a normal part of the aging process, and we can help the elderly avoid the symptoms of depression by participating in the Senior Prom and other elderly service projects. VIII. UPCOMING PROJECTS Lindsay Grude talked about Books for Kids, where we will organize and package donated books for local schools and enjoy a free lunch. Megan got us pumped for intramural broomball, which is a very fun sport involving slipping and sliding on ice! Our games will be the next three Sunday nights at 12:40am. If you have never played broomball before, you will not want to miss this opportunity! OTHER PROJECTS: Riverview Nursing Home~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Mon. "Gustatory athletes" or "gurgitators" train intensively for these events and compete for prizes worth thousands of dollars. Visit http://www.ifoce.com to see some of the amazing records that have been set by eaters of the I.F.O.C.E.!
