CALL TO ORDER, President Nick Hoffman, 7:10 pm II. WELCOME Welcome to everyone, especially our guests Don Kossick and Bill Tasch from Ann Arbor Downtown Kiwanis and Steve Kren from the Michigan Union Board of Representatives, Dance Marathon, and The Detroit Project! III. PRESENTATION ON MUBR, DANCE MARATHON, AND THE DETROIT PROJECT Steve Kren told us that the Michigan Union Board of Representatives, which informs the Director of the Michigan Union on policy and structure changes, is looking for new members at large. Applications are available at the Campus Information Centers desk and room 1310 of the Union and are due this Monday at 5:00 pm. Steve also informed us that Dance Marathon (http://umdm.org) is recruiting moralers to help dancers stay energized and on their feet during the 30-hour Marathon on March 25-26, and that The Detroit Project (http://www.umich.edu/~thedp/) is looking for volunteers for the annual DP Day on April 1st. IV. HAPPY CENTS Happy Cents is a segment of the meeting when anyone can deposit change into our special "Jaria Jar" and have the opportunity to share something that makes them happy. This week we heard that Phillip LaRue was happy to learn that the Death Calculator predicts you will live two years longer if you do community service, Kristin Doyle is excited about the Olympics, Megan Foley plugged the Circle K IM Broomball team, Karuna Seshasai was relieved that her friend who is working in Torino is alive and well and that she and Lindsay Nelson made $110 bucketing for Dance Marathon, Lucy Karpilovskaya was glad to have finished her English and Art History papers, Rich Torres is looking forward to Arbor Hospice training starting on Monday, Amanda Yu can't wait for the new season of the Amazing Race to start, and Zeil Shah was thankful that she was finished with the exam and two papers she had in the last 72 hours and pleased about receiving her first solid "A" on a science exam at the University of Michigan. V. PROJECTS IN REVIEW Stefanie Theis told us about Food Gatherers, where there was a truck full of food to be unloaded and organized for the residents of Sequoia Place Elderly Residence. The highlight for Stefanie was when one nice lady said to Phillip LaRue while he was leaving, "Thank you for being here, you big, strong man!" Matt Boshoven talked about Sciencepalooza at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, where we taught many young children about the Science of Sports. While doing science demonstrations was fun, Matt's favorite part of the project was when he would get to play around in the museum during down-times. VI. NOMINATIONS FOR OFFICE Elections for next year's Circle K Executive Board will take place at next week's meeting. Candidates can still run off the floor at the elections meeting for the positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Club Editor. Members currently running for Executive Board positions are: PRESIDENT: - Stefanie Theis VICE-PRESIDENT: - Phillip LaRue SECRETARY: - Lindsay Grude TREASURER: - Amy Shatten - Zeil Shah CLUB EDITOR: - None If you are interested in running for an Executive Board position and would like some more information, please e-mail ckiboard@umich.edu. VII. BIRTHDAY COMPETITION This evening, members with birthdays in February and August participated in the Membership Development Committee's birthday competition. Their task was to match up two halves of a broken heart while blindfolded. Amy Grude most closely matched up the two pieces and will go on to compete in the final competition in April. VIII. SOCIAL ISSUE OF THE MONTH: CHILDREN'S HUNGER The Social Issue of the Month program serves to educate members about various social issues in our community. This week, the Children's Service Committee and the Hunger/Housing/Environment Committee introduced this month's issue, hunger in the world's children. We learned that 852 million people in the world are hungry, and 115 million of these people are under the age of five. These alarming numbers were brought to life in the videos we watched about three children in Botswana, Cambodia, and Nepal. Future Social Issue of the Month programming will address opportunities to get involved with eliminating hunger in the Ann Arbor area. IX. NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS Phillip LaRue welcomed the latest additions to our club's committee system. Six new members have been added across our existing committees. Also, a new Technology Committee was created and now has five members. X. UPCOMING PROJECTS This week we publicized upcoming projects a bit differently: there was an advertisement randomly taped under some members' chairs along with candy. The lucky members had to earn their treat by reading the information on the card. Esther Wu announced the Pop-Up Charity A Cappella Concert taking place on February 17th at Rackham Auditorium at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $8 in advance and $9 at the door. Please e-mail Public Relations Chair Kristin Childress at klchildr@umich.edu if you would like to help PR for this event. Kristin Childress reminded us about District Convention (DCON), an annual, weekend-long event with service projects, workshops, banquets, award presentations, a formal dance, and more. The cost for attending DCON, including two nights at the Clarion Hotel in Lansing and all meals, is $125; however, our club will reimburse you for a large portion of this amount. The registration deadline for DCON has been extended to February 16th. Also, Stefanie Theis talked about the Spaghetti Dinner Project, where we will be serving dinner with South Lyon Kiwanians. Kelly Cobb explained that we will be adding another weekly Motor Meals project to our calendar. If you are interested, please e-mail Kelly at kwcobb@umich.edu and let him know which days of the week you would be available. Karuna Seshasai told us about the Valentine's Day party at Mott Children's Hospital, where there will be cookie- decorating, Valentine card-making, and game-playing.
