CALL TO ORDER, President Nick Hoffman, 7:10 pm II. WELCOME Welcome to everyone, especially our guest Don Kossick from Ann Arbor Downtown Kiwanis. III. HAPPY CENTS Happy Cents is a segment of the meeting when anyone can deposit change into our special "Jaria Jar" and have the opportunity to share something that makes them happy. This week we heard that Lindsay Grude is excited about Love Pit, Amanda Yu and Stefanie Theis were just happy to be at the meeting, Katrina Rowley was glad to get back in touch with Circle K, and Amy Mangieri was looking forward to the s'mores social following the meeting. Also, Karuna Seshasai and Megan Foley presented a love poem to the Elderly Service Committee and the Directors asking them out on a "date". Representatives from both parties accepted their roses, and this comeback of committee dating made Nick Hoffman happy! IV. PROJECTS IN REVIEW Dana Simons, Amanda Yu, and Matthew Boshoven each talked about their favorite memories from the annual Circle K ski trip last weekend. Dana enjoyed hanging out in the lodge and playing Uno with the other people not hitting the slopes. Amanda had fun tubing with five-year-olds and snowboarding. Matthew's highlights were watching Kelly Cobb fall down (in Kelly's words, "sit down") on the slope and playing an intense game of Cranium. Nick Hoffman told us about a "feisty old lady" he met at the Sequoia Place Computer Help project. Because of her inspiration, Nick will be learning Shavian, an alternate writing system to the Latin alphabet! V. BIRTHDAY COMPETITION This evening, members with birthdays in January and July participated in the Membership Development Committee's birthday competition. Their task was to identify nine members of Circle K's Leadership Team by looking at their baby pictures. Stefanie Theis correctly guessed all nine pictures and will go on to compete in the final competition in April. VI. KIWANIS FAMILY ACTIVITIES The Kiwanis Family Committee got the club excited about Love Pit, a District-wide, Olympic-themed event taking place on Saturday, January 21st at 12:30. Love Pit will feature service, food, and friendly competition. Members in attendance got to engage in some competition of their own: we did the limbo, carried eggs on little plastic spoons, and followed a clue to the final treasure, a bag full of candy! Congratulations to the winning team. For more information on Love Pit and to sign up, please go to http://www.umcirclek.org/lovepit.php. If you have any questions about the event, please e-mail Kolleen Jennings at kmjenni@umich.edu. VII. UPCOMING PROJECTS Holly Templeton talked about preparing dinner for local teens at the Neutral Zone, and Hunters in the Sky at the Leslie Science Center, where we will run educational activities about birds of prey. Kristin Childress reminded us that our winter mass meeting is in two weeks and we need help with PRing beforehand so that everyone on campus hears about our great organization! Megan Foley told us that Circle K is heading to the North American International Auto Show on Sunday, January 22nd from noon to 6:00. Tickets are $12 ($8 if we take a large enough group) and we will take signups until January 19th. If you have any questions about this event, please e-mail Megan at megfoley@umich.edu. Our next meeting will be Thursday, January 19th at 7:00 pm in the Anderson Room of the Michigan Union. ---THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN CIRCLE K--- * * * * * # # * MEETINGS: Thursdays, 7pm, Union * # # * "The greatest WEB PAGE: www.umcirclek.org * # # * service to E-MAIL: circlek@umich.edu * ### * yourself * # # * is service OFFICE: 4213 Michigan Union * # # * to others" HOURS: 2-5pm M-Th * # # * PHONE: 615-0523 * * * * ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The mission of the University of Michigan Circle K is: To develop leaders with a lifelong commitment to service ~~~~~~~~ It's a bird!...It's a plane!...It's the secret message! ~~~~~~~~ There are only twenty-eight days left until the start of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. The Olympic Cauldron at the Stadio Olimpico is ready to welcome the flame. However, first the torch must successfully conclude its two-month-long relay involving 10,001 torch bearers. Here are the top five problems encountered along the Olympic torch route: ~ A very angry Smokey the Bear ~ Torch-jackings in urban areas ~ Drive-by goosings ~ Torchbearers driven insane by repeated playing of the "Chariots of Fire" theme ~ Difficulty getting melted marshmallows off of the torch after the s'mores party got out of hand.
