CALL TO ORDER, President Nick Hoffman, 7:10 pm II. WELCOME Welcome to everyone, especially our guests Don Kossick from Ann Arbor Downtown Kiwanis and Kate Bolz and Allison Leff, alumnae of the Emerson National Hunger Fellowship. III. HAPPY CENTS Happy Cents is a segment of the meeting when anyone can deposit change into our special "Jaria Jar" and have the opportunity to share something that makes them happy. This week we heard that Phillip LaRue can't wait for the Leadership Team social outing to the Macaroni Grill on Saturday, something made Zeil Shah happy but she forgot what that was, Lucy Karpilovskaya was relieved about finishing her religion paper, Kristin Doyle is excited about throwing a birthday party for her friend who has never celebrated her birthday since it's on Christmas Day, Don Kossick is excited about the Ann Arbor Downtown Kiwanis Christmas sale this weekend, Megan Foley had the club sing "Happy Birthday" to Karuna Seshasai, Karuna is enjoying a little break from schoolwork before her finals start, Nick Hoffman registered for some fun classes for next term, and Matthew Thomas had nothing further to say than, "Seven [semesters] down, one to go." IV. MEMBERS OF THE MONTH Every month Circle K honors 1-2 members who go above and beyond in some way to make a difference in the club and in the community. Congratulations to this month's Members of the Month, Dana Simons and Amanda Yu, for their excitement toward Circle K and their contributions to their respective committees. To nominate someone for Member of the Month, fill out the online form under the "Member Resources" section of the website (http://umcirclek.org). V. PROJECTS IN REVIEW Amanda Yu verbally demonstrated the difference between her slow, steady ringing of the Salvation Army bell and Stefaine Theis' more hyperactive tempo. Stefanie also shared some of the inspiring stories she and Amanda heard at the bell-ringing project that kept them feeling warm in spite of the brisk temperature. Emily Huth told us about the care package and letters that were made for Jaria, the PROVIDES child our club supports. Karuna Seshasai talked about the Thanksgiving progressive party. The menu included sweet potato pies, turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, cornbread, pie, cider, and other traditional Thanksgiving fare. VI. EMERSON NATIONAL HUNGER FELLOWSHIP Kate Bolz from the U-M School of Social Work and Allison Leff from the Ross School of Business spoke to the club about the Emerson National Hunger Fellowship, a project of the Congressional Hunger Center. It is a one-year, post-graduate program which emphasizes a balance between direct service and public policy in the struggle to eliminate hunger and poverty. Fellows spend six months in a field placement fighting hunger at the local level, and then they do advocacy work with government and national organizations in Washington, D.C. For more information about the fellowship and the application process, e-mail Kate Bolz at kbolz@umich.edu or visit http://www.hungercenter.org/national/national.htm. VII. BIRTHDAY COMPETITION This evening, members with birthdays in December and June participated in the Membership Development Committee's birthday competition, which was a holiday-themed, backwards spelling bee. Two-year birthday competition champion Nick Hoffman was the first to be eliminated when he backwards-spelled "Christmas" without the letter "r". Karuna Seshasai was victorious in the sudden-death round when she correctly spelled "dreidle" backwards. She will go on to compete in the final competition in April. VIII. INTERROGATION BOX Kelly Cobb volunteered to be interrogated by the box. He was asked to name two things he cannot live without. He learned in the third grade that the answer to this question is food and shelter. We also found out that Kelly's favorite non-vital organ is his spleen because it's such a funny word! IX. UPCOMING PROJECTS Manna Hara told us about how we can save the native plants of Michigan from the glossy buckthorn's wrath by going on the Nature Conservatory project. Karuna Seshasai talked about Holmes Book night, where we will read books to the elementary students and do arts and crafts projects with them. Also, if you are interested in being a mentor for a 4th or 5th grader at Holmes Elementary School in the upcoming semester, e-mail Karuna (karunas@umich.edu) by December 16th and keep Fridays from 1-4 pm open in your winter term schedule. The Membership Development Committee reminded us that the deadline to sign up for the annual Circle K ski trip is December 15th (e-mail Megan Foley at megfoley@umich.edu for more information). Finally, the Kiwanis Family Committee introduced Love Pit 2006, which will take place on January 21st at 12:30 pm. The Olympics- themed event will feature free food, friendly competition, service projects, and the opportunity to meet members of other Circle K clubs.
