CALL TO ORDER, President Nick Hoffman, 7:10 pm II. WELCOME Welcome to everyone, especially guests Don Kossick and Bill Tasch from Ann Arbor Downtown Kiwanis and Alex Gossage and Kelly Case from Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living. III. HAPPY CENTS Happy Cents is a segment of the meeting when anyone can deposit change into our special "Jaria Jar" and have the opportunity to share something that makes them happy. This week we heard that Kelly Cobb is happy about being able to catch up on sleep and homework this weekend for the first time this semester, Kristin Doyle will be very happy if we help her get extra participation points in her political science class by attending a briefing on the current situation in Ethiopia, Natalia Maska is excited to visit her friend at Western, Nick Hoffman is looking forward to a fun and memorable Fall Leadership Training Conference with the Board this weekend, Manna Hara doesn't have to take another exam until after Thanksgiving and she can't wait to see Harry Potter, and Chris Irvine is happy to visit some friends at Ohio State. IV. PROJECTS IN REVIEW Kelly Cobb talked about last weekend's 24 Hours of Service, where over 60 participants did a total of 265 hours of service. There were 20 back-to-back projects, including leaf raking for Neighborhood Senior Services, Sciencepalooza at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, a charity pool tournament for the Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, the Dance Marathon Victor's Volleyball Tournament (where Circle K won second place in the spirit contest!), paper crane folding, cookie-baking/ decorating, scarf-making, and more! Also, Amy Shatten told us about Trick-or-Can, where 423 pounds of canned food donations were collected for Food Gatherers. V. MEMBERS OF THE MONTH Every month Circle K honors 1-2 members who go above and beyond in some way to make a difference in the club and in the community. Congratulations to this month's Members of the Month, Arkisha Howard and Zeil Shah, who were very enthusiastic both in preparing for and during 24 Hours of Service! To nominate someone for Member of the Month, fill out the online form under the "Member Resources" section of the website (http://umcirclek.org). VI. WASHTENAW TALENT EXCHANGE SPEAKER Alex Gossage from the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living spoke to the club about the Washtenaw Talent Exchange Program. The program allows members to contribute their skills and benefit from the skills of others. Common tasks include grocery shopping, yardwork, transportation, housekeeping, home repairs, and many other services. The program strives to help people focus on their strengths instead of their disabilities. VII. BIRTHDAY COMPETITION This evening, members with birthdays in November and May participated in the birthday competition. They played a rousing game of Thanksgiving-themed Twister. Yuly Wung won by successfully placing his "Left foot on cornucopia" and will go on to compete in the final competition in April. VIII. SOCIAL ISSUE OF THE MONTH: HURRICANE KATRINA The Social Issue of the Month program serves to educate members about various social issues in our community. This week, the Mentorship Committee introduced this month's issue, Hurricane Katrina, which was the sixth strongest storm ever to have hit the Atlantic Basin. Bill Tasch from Ann Arbor Downtown Kiwanis shared his experience of working at the Red Cross headquarters in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for two weeks in September with his wife Karen. They helped open a shelter for volunteers and met people from all over the US, Canada, Norway, and other countries. While helping with the relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina, Bill was moved by the sense of coming together he saw among everyone involved. IX. A skunk sat on a stump and thunk the stump stunk, but the stump thunk the skunk stunk ...and this one. While one black bug bled blue-black blood, the other black bug bled blue. This one looks easy, but try it for yourself! Girl gargoyle, guy gargoyle. And finally, here is a fun little twisted story! A tree toad loved a she-toad Who lived up in a tree. He was a two-toed tree toad But a three-toed toad was she. The two-toed tree toad tried to win The three-toed she-toad's heart, For the two-toed tree toad loved the ground That the three-toed tree toad trod. But the two-toed tree toad tried in vain. He couldn't please her whim. From her tree toad bower With her three-toed power The she-toad vetoed him.
