CALL TO ORDER, President Nick Hoffman, 7:10 pm II. COSTUME CONTEST The Circle K costume contest kicked off our Halloween meeting! In attendance were some M&Ms, a devil, and Italian soccer player, a rabbit, some crayons, a kid, and deja vu. The judges (a.k.a. Kiwanians) declared the crayons winners of a $10 gift certificate to Buffalo Wild Wings. III. WELCOME Welcome to everyone, especially guests Don Kossick and Bill Tasch from Downtown Ann Arbor Kiwanis, Greater Whitmore Lake Kiwanis members George Brown, Joan Brown, Gigi Forner, and Marie Popp, and members of the University of Michigan Sign Club Michelle Black, Breanne Bond, Erin Gellis, Molly Gordon, and Ashley Graham. IV. HAPPY CENTS Happy Cents is a segment of the meeting when anyone can deposit change into our special "Jaria Jar" and have the opportunity to share something that makes them happy. This week we heard that Whitney McEachran is looking forward to next Saturday's Charity Pool Tournament raising money for the Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, Karuna Seshasai is excited to celebrate her friend Megan Foley's 21st birthday (we sang "Happy Birthday" to her!), Phillip LaRue will be done with midterms soon, Megan will finally be able to get some sleep soon, Arkisha Howard passed her gateway exam, Matt Boshoven does not have anything to do in the coming week and plans on playing video games, Natalia Maska was happy to be a red crayon for Halloween and to go to the haunted house after the meeting, and Stephanie Mayne was also liking being a crayon and she can't wait for Halloween! V. PROJECTS IN REVIEW Matt Boshoven talked about last weekend's Committee Lock-In, where we did plenty of team-building exercises, painted the Rock, and made new friends. Since then, Matt is really anticipating a great year with Circle K! Mike Moses told us about Cornucopia of Service, an event hosted by EMU for the Michigan District of Circle K. He had fun raking leaves, making candy bags for homeless children, winning the mummy wrapping contest, and painting pumpkins with Circle K members from U of M, MSU, EMU, and Adrian. VI. SOCIAL ISSUE OF THE MONTH: HEARING IMPAIRMENT As a continuation of our Social Issue of the Month programming, members of the Sign Club taught us the alphabet and some basic words in American Sign Language (ASL). Each group was also given a number of specific words to learn and incorporate into a short skit, many of which were about Halloween and all of which were very funny! If you are interested in learning more ASL, send an e-mail to Ashley Graham (aslygrah@umich.edu), the President of the Sign Club. To learn more about hearing impairment, visit the Circle K website at http://umcirclek.org/resources_reflection.php. In honor of this momentous gaining of an extra hour, here are a couple historical anecdotes having to do with DST. * Widespread confusion was created during the 1950s and 1960s when each U.S. locality could start and end DST as it desired. For example, on one bus route from Ohio to West Virginia passengers had to change their watches seven times in 35 miles! One year 23 pairs of DST start and end dates were used in Iowa alone! This situation led to millions of dollars of costs to several industries, especially transportation and communications. * In September of 1999, the Palestinian West Bank was on DST while Israel had just switched back to Standard Time. West Bank Palestinians prepared time bombs and smuggled them to Arab Israelis, who misunderstood the time on the bombs. As the bombs were being planted, they exploded--one hour too early--killing three terrorists instead of two busloads of people, the intended victims. (http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/k.html) You have been warned...make sure to "fall backward" on Sunday! Enjoy your extra hour this weekend, whether you spend it partying, studying, watching horror movies, or eating candy!
