Rich, Chair of the Health/Disabilities Committee, presented some statistics regarding hearing impairment, this month's issue. We then watched a video clip narrated by hearing impaired students on campus. To learn more about hearing impairment, visit the Circle K website at http://umcirclek.org/resources_reflection.php. Additional resources are also available at Services for Students with Disabilities (http://www.umich.edu/~sswd). Future Social Issue of the Month programming will include an American Sign Language instruction session and a panel of U-M students from the Hearing Impaired Student Organization. VII. BIRTHDAY COMPETITION This evening, members with birthdays in September and October participated in the birthday competition. Their challenge was to construct the best Halloween costume out of a trash bag, streamers, construction paper, and an array of other supplies. Matthew Thomas won as "Matthew Scissor-Hands" and will go on to compete in the final competition in April. VIII. Yep, you are reading a secret message dedicated to those astounding organs stuck to the sides of our heads. Like humans, most animals also have ears, though their functions can vary. Here are some fun facts about ears in the animal kingdom: * ELEPHANTS use their large, thin ears as a personal cooling system. They live in hot climates but their blood is even hotter, so the heat from their body escapes into the air through the surface of their ears. * POLAR BEARS have small nubs for ears which can be completely flattened across their heads to keep out water while swimming. * BIRDS have two holes in their heads with no outer ears, a design that is good for flying. * In HUMANS, especially university students, it was recently decided that ears serve an extremely vital function besides that of hearing: auditory osmosis!
