CALL TO ORDER, President Nick Hoffman, 7:10 pm II. WELCOME Welcome to everyone, especially guests Fran Brennan from the Ann Arbor News, Don Kossick and Bill Tasch from Downtown Ann Arbor Kiwanis, past Circle K Secretary Amy Grude, and former Circle K member Pam Handley. III. HAPPY CENTS Happy Cents is a segment of the meeting when anyone can deposit change into our special "Jaria Jar" and have the opportunity to share something that makes them happy. This week we heard that Nick Hoffman's life is much easier now that he has dropped a class, Arkisha Howard is happy to be alive, Megan Foley is excited to meet up with some friends she hasn't seen in awhile and to go to the Humane Society, Bill Tasch was inspired by the positive energy he saw in Baton Rouge, Louisiana while he and his wife were helping out with relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina, and Kolleen Jennings is looking forward to her Spring Break in Berlin. IV. PROJECTS IN REVIEW Nick talked about managing the "toy department" at the Ann Arbor Kiwanis Rummage Sale, and he brought in an awesome ninja doll he bought there. Phillip LaRue told us about Tiny Tots at the Leslie Science Center, where he attempted to teach 1- to 3-year-olds the difference between the concepts of sinking and floating. And, of course, he got to meet Tortuga, the turtle! V. WARM THE CHILDREN SPEAKER Fran Brennan of the Ann Arbor News spoke to the club about Warm the Children, a program that provides new winter clothing to children of underprivileged families. Each year, members of Circle K volunteer to meet with a family at the local Meijer store and help them buy winter jackets, snow boots, hats, scarves, gloves, and other articles to make sure the kids stay warm through the winter. If you are interested in learning more about Warm the Children, send an e-mail to Holly Templeton at hollismt@umich.edu. VI. AZTEC GOLD SCAVENGER HUNT Watching a clip from Pirates of the Caribbean got all the mates excited for The Quest for Aztec Gold! The ten groups had to search the Michigan Union for answers to clues leading to the location of the hidden treasure. VII. UPCOMING PROJECTS Holly Templeton talked about Sciencepalooza at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, where we will be helping out with activities relating to geology. She also reminded us that there will be an orientation for the Peace Neighborhood Center's elementary- and middle-school tutoring program on Tuesday evening. Kelly Cobb spoke about 24 Hours of Service, which will take place from November 5th-6th. If you are interested in helping out with the planning of this large-scale event, send an e-mail to kwcobb@umich.edu. Anyone planning on mentoring a 4th or 5th grader at Holmes Elementary school every Friday afternoon needs to e-mail Karuna Seshasai at karunas@umich.edu by tonight. Phillip told us about the several PR sessions talking place before next Thursday's Service Fair. We will need lots of help with chalking and flyering around campus! I thought so! "Swashbuckling Day" was established in 1243 AD by King Lutefisk, and it was celebrated the third Thursday of every month with a "u" in it. It was a day for loosening one's belt buckle and sashaying around the courtyard until one's pants fell down. Later, pirates would take advantage of the holiday to rob people while their pants were draped loosely around their ankles. This is also when they began referring to treasure as "booty", for obvious reasons. The pirates, not wanting to look like opportunists, would tell their pirate mates that they had earned their ill-gotten booty by force and skill, which is why we now think of swashbuckling as fighting, even though it used to mean "walking silly with one's belt open until one's pants fall down".
