CALL TO ORDER, President Lisa Slominski, 7:10pm II. WELCOME to everyone, especially guests Don Kossick from downtown Ann Arbor Kiwanis, and past Circle Kers John Gleicher, Lynne Strickler and Matt Kochanek. There were a few reminders before we got started: ~&~ Next week is our winter mass meeting so spread the word! ~&~ Committee applications are due in two weeks. ~&~ This semester each committee will be running parts of one of our club meetings, and this meeting is MDER's. III. TEACH FOR AMERICA Past Circle Ker John Gleicher spoke to us today about the Teach For America program he is involved with. The program takes college graduates and sets them up to teach in some of America's most desperate school districts. The program is not just for people who are planning on becoming teachers; anyone interested in making a difference is encouraged to apply for an experience that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. For more information check out www.teachforamerica.org. IV. SOCIAL ISSUE OF THE MONTH The MDER committee introduced us to January's social issue of the month, literacy. Although many people are not aware of this, adult literacy is a big problem, even right here in Washtenaw county. As many as 12% of adults right here in our county have "low" literacy which can hurt them when it comes to looking for a job or raising their children. Circle K provides us with an opportunity to make a difference in this disturbing statistic with projects like Washtenaw Literacy. For more information check out our calendar. V. BIRTHDAYS MDER ran the monthly birthday competition for January and July birthdays at this week's meeting. Everyone with a birthday in either of these two months came to the front of the room where they had the rest of the club members guess a word on a card in a taboo style game. Pam won with seven words and will go on to participate in the final competition later this year. VI. MDER ROUNDTABLES For the activity at this meeting, MDER split us into six groups and we had discussions about some important topics regarding our club. Each group rotated through each of the three topics: the importance of socials, how to make our club more welcoming, and new social ideas. An MDER facilitator at each station kept the conversation going and took notes of the ideas we came up with. VII. UPCOMING PROJECTS ~&~ Leslie Science Center Mad Scientist Day ..... Sat. Everyone had a good time, even Lisa who found out she loves to ski! Also, Kelly told us about the many times he fell down on relatively easy runs. IX. CLOSING Don't forget to pick up a committee application if you are interested in joining a committee. District convention registration forms are now available as well.
