CALL TO ORDER, President Payal Patel, 7:10pm Important Announcement: Elections for the Executive Board positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Bulletin Editor will take place on February 12th. NOMINATIONS WILL BEGIN NEXT THURSDAY, JANUARY 29TH! If you are interested in running for the Executive Board and would like some more information, please email circlek@umich.edu. II. WELCOME to everyone, especially guests Chris Perpich from Teach for America, and Vanessa Mayeski from Washtenaw Literacy. III. WASHTENAW LITERACY SPEAKER Vanessa is the Development Directory from Washtenaw Literacy, an organization that deals with adult literacy in Ann Arbor. Belive it or not, there are many adults in the Ann Arbor area that cannot read. Circle K goes every other week to Washtenaw Literacy to help with the conversation skills of people learning English as a second language. These classes are vital for adults to be able to communicate on a daily basis. IV. THE GAME OF LIFE: LITERACY ACTIVITY In this game of life, the goal was to achieve as much as possible - a good education, job, and a home. Members went around to various stations attempting to secure some of these goals, but some found the task much harder than others. Some people were given qualities that made the pursuit of their goals much more difficult. The divisions were: - Do not speak any English - English as a Second Language - Cannot read or write - Speak, read, and write perfect English It is important to remember just how hard it can be for someone who has trouble with any aspect of literacy. V. SOCIAL ISSUE OF THE MONTH: ADULT LITERACY The MDER committee did an informative skit with some interesting facts about literacy. The ghosts of adult literacy past, present took "Evanezer" on a journey to show him that adult literacy is an important social issue. Did you know that 20% of adults read at or below the 5th grade level? And that children of parents who are literate are much more likely to succeed? VI. They call upon outstanding recent college graduates to commit two years to teach in low-income rural and urban communities and become lifelong leaders to expand opportunities for children growing up there. The application deadline is coming up: February 15th! If you are interested, be sure to apply soon. VIII. INTERROGATION BOX The Interrogation Box is a box where any member can submit any question they would like. At the meetings, members can volunteer to be interrogated. This week, Eric was asked "If Lisa was an animal, what animal would she be?" (A sea horse). Deepa was asked her favorite camp song, and treated us to a few lines of "Leaving on a Jet Plane". IX. PROJECTS/SOCIAL IN REVIEW Kristen enjoyed cooking at Ronald McDonald house... and the residents there loved the Tacos! Eric told us how much fun it was painting super hero decorations for DCON. A whole bunch of Circle K'ers took over the banner production room, and had a wonderful time. Rumor has it that batman was the best painted super hero. Priya talked about going to Mentorship every week, and being paired up with a 3rd to 5th grade child. X. ADJOURNMENT Thank you to everyone who came today!
