CALL TO ORDER, Treasurer Kelly Anderson, 7:10pm II. WELCOME to everyone, especially guest Don Kossick from the Ann Arbor Downtown Kiwanis. III. THIS WEEK IN CIRCLE K Here is a sample of what went on this week in Circle K: <><><> Riverview Nursing Home <><><> Jess told us about making Halloween Decorations for the residents of Riverview. They really enjoyed it, and one woman who had just moved in was excited to see all the people there. <><><> Kiwanis Lunch <><><> Lynne talked about going to a Ann Arbor Western Kiwanis meeting at Webber's where she and other Circle K'ers received a free and delicious lunch. They also met a lot of Kiwanians who are interested in working with Circle K. On a humorous note, several of the Kiwanians knew a little German (Lynne's major) and called her a donkey in German. :) IV. ONGOING PROJECTS Ongoing projects are projects that are attended by the same Circle K'ers every week or every other week. It is a chance for us to really get to know the organization and develop a relationship with the people we work with. The ongoing projects committee ran an activity where we split into groups and rotated to different stations to learn about the current ongoing projects. They include: <> HELPSOURCE: Tutor teenage girls living in a foster home together. <> SEED: Teach science in a fun way to elementary school children! <> WASHTENAW SHELTER: Help in the daily running of the homeless shelter. They need volunteers to stay open. <> TIME FOR TOTS: Help baby-sit the young children of homeless parents. <> HUNGER COALITION: One a week help cook a meal for the homeless and hungry of Ann Arbor. If you are interested in any of these projects, or interested in learning about any other ongoing projects, email Stephanie: smwats@umich.edu. We found out that if everyone at the meeting signed up for 1 ongoing project, we could help approximately 170 people every week. V. INTERROGATION BOX The Interrogation Box is a box where any member can submit any question they would like. At the meetings, members can volunteer to be interrogated. This week, Evan was asked the question "Why is the Interrogation Box ugly?" We found out that Evan did not think it was ugly at all. Some may disagree however, since the Interrogation Box needs some serious decorating. VI. BIRTHDAYS The MDER (Membership Development Education & Reflection) Committee celebrated all the September and October Birthdays. Each person celebrating a birthday in September or October participated in the birthday challenge. Each got a piece of paper and had 2 minutes to make the best paper airplane possible. Everyone flew their plane across the room and told us the date of their birthday. The plane that went the farthest was disqualified for being weighted down with pennies. You have to watch out for those engineers! The real winner will come back in April for the grand prize competition. VII. PROJECTS <><><> FOCUS HOPE: Fri. Oct. 17 1:00pm-6:00pm <><><> Attention Shoppers! We'll be heading to Detroit to spend some time with the seniors at Focus Hope. We'll be helping them with their shopping, bagging, and taking their things to their car. It should be personal and lots of fun! Questions?? Comments?? Email Kevin at khzhao@umich.edu <><><> FLAG FOOTBALL: TBA <><><> Join the Circle K Intramural Flag Football Team! This is a great way to get to know your fellow club members while letting off some steam and having an awesome time! This is a COED team so we need a lot of girls to sign up too! (Plus, if more people sign up, each player pays less!) Questions?? Comments?? Email Suruchi at slall@umich.edu <><><> K-KIDS: Every Friday 2:00pm-7:00pm <><><> If you are interested in working with kids on a weekly basis, come to K-Kids! We go to Berry Elementary School in Detroit and teach 6th graders about community service. We also do a variety of fun projects with them. This is a chance for you to be a positive role model for kids who need one. Email jshatzma@umich.edu. OTHER UPCOMING PROJECTS: --> Tiny Tots <><><><><><><><><><><>< Fri. The following are some of the phrases Demko takes credit for: "Remember When ______ " "Go" "Solid" "And by ____ I mean _____" "On the Double" If you think that for any of these phrases he A. didn't have anything to do with making them popular or B. they aren't widely used anyway and he is just imagining things, email: it.wasnt.you.demko@umich.edu. Since we have now all had a good laugh at Evan's expense, here is a plug: He is attempting to spread the use of the word "happy" to mean that something is bad. If you don't think it's completely ridiculous, go ahead and start using it. :)
