Welcome Welcome to everyone, especially those who are visiting us for the first time on this cold autumn evening. Joining us today are our Ann Arbor Downtown Kiwanis Advisor Don Kossick and our guest speaker Amy Stroud from Hunger Coalition. III. Join the Club It is not too late to become an official member. Membership forms are available at our regular meetings and on our website. E-mail circlek@umich.edu for more information. IV. Hunger Coalition We were fortunate to have Amy Stroud from Hunger Coalition talk with us about her organization that feeds over 125 hungry people every weeknight in Ann Arbor. As a non-profit organization, Hunger Coalition is supported by over 400 regular volunteers and private donors. Much of the food is donated by Food Gatherers, which rescues surplus food from local stores. Hunger Coalition provides a full course meal to basically anyone who walks through the door. Each meal is hosted by a different church which makes its kitchen available for use each night. Only 30% of the people who eat meals from Hunger Coalition are homeless. The remainder are working poor who cannot afford to pay for food and shelter with their low incomes or those on fixed incomes. U-M Circle K staffs the meal every fourth Thursday. Hunger Coalition depends on us to be there and it is a great way to experience an immediate sense of giving. V. Ongoing Projects We broke into groups and rotated among several stations that described ongoing projects that our club is working on. By signing up for an on-going project, you are committing to weekly or bi-monthly volunteering with the same organization and the same volunteers. The endeavor with this kind of service is to build stronger relationships between members and those they are working with, both in the club and the organization, through continuous service. - Neutral Zone Teen Center ~> 5:15-7:15pm, Tuesdays Tutor awesome teens in all sorts of subjects. Get to learn about the kids, hang out, and have fun! - HelpSource ~> 4:30-6:30pm, Wednesdays (Tentative) Be a mentor and give special attention to teens who need it. Work with the same group of 13-17 year olds every week. These teens are appointed by court to live in group-homes in Ann Arbor. We will spend two hours every week hanging out with then and doing fun activities. - Baby Think-It-Over ~> Weekdays during school hours Assist in school classrooms and possibly present to kids involved in the Baby Think-It-Over program. This program is intended to raise awareness about teen pregnancy (the kids carry a simulated baby around for two days). Exact days and times are yet to be determined, but will definitely be during school hours on weekdays. There is a one-hour training session required, so sign up to keep updated! - SEED ~> 12:45-4pm, Monthly Fridays Involvement in this project means you will be a member of the core planning team for the monthly visits to a classroom in a Detroit elementary school. Participation will involve meeting weekly to set-up and plan science and arts and crafts projects for the monthly visit to the classroom. Weekly meeting time is flexible based on our group and **you do not necessarily have to make it to the monthly Friday sessions in order to be involved in the planning!!*** - Washtenaw Shelter Association-Felch's Women's Shelter ~> two nights a month, either 5:30-11pm or 11pm-7am Volunteering at the Women's Shelter includes general help around the shelter, either with upkeep or updating the nightly log, and mostly providing confidential, empathetic listening to the women living there. Felch's is only open to women volunteers, but both men and women can sign up for the training if they want to volunteer with the warming center, which will open in December. This project will run on a bi-monthly basis and all participants do not necessarily need to attend together. So, if you are interested, sign up and we will help you work it into your schedule! - College Prep workshops at Cooley High School ~> 11:15am-2:45pm, Fridays or 12:15pm-3:45pm, Thursdays Work with Detroit high school juniors and seniors on finding and filling out college applications as well as working on personal statements. The workshops will employ both creative writing and informal discussions about applying to colleges with teenagers that don't often get the support they need in either of these areas. - Home of New Vision ~> Dates and time are yet to be determined Home of New Vision is a non-profit agency in Ann Arbor that serves women who are in recovery from chemical dependence. Volunteers will be working with up to ten children, from birth to age 8 yrs. Experience with children or with the substance abuse field is helpful, but not necessary. These are the possible times for us to get a group together to volunteer: Any weekday 7:30-9pm or a 1.5-2 hour shift on Sunday between 9am-9pm. ** If you are interested in any of these projects please e-mail nmatti@umich.edu.
